On the corner of Coolsingel – Aert van Nesstraat, the luxury hotel Atlanta is located above the shops there. The hotel was built between 1929 and 1931 to a design by the Hague architect Frans van der Togt in the Art Deco style and officially opened its doors on May 2, 1931. When it was completed in 1931, the hotel contained a double-height café-restaurant. on the ground floor where the shops are now. During the bombing of Rotterdam on 14 May 1940, Hotel Atlanta passed through almost unscathed. My grandfather lived in the streets behind the building before WWII. In the summer when the windows and doors were open because of the heat he could here the music of the orchestra in the restaurant/club. It has been a municipal monument since 1998.

From the archives: New York view
In 2012 I visited the Dutch Photomuseum (Nederlands Fotomuseum) with my family. Through the windows of one of the halls I photographed New York, the hotel with that name, of course, and both the museum and hotel are worth a visit!
Throwback thursday, a cruiseship named Rotterdam
A few years ago I visit the former flagship of the Holland America Line, 228 meters long, 28 meters wide, 51 meters high, the ss Rotterdam. Commissioned in 1958 by Queen Juliana she had her maiden trip in 1959. Here is a Youtube link with some footage of this maiden voyage at 3 september 1959. Worth a visit!
If I can’t make it there…
Hotel New York. Not the city but the memories are there! A former head office of the Holland Amerika Line and in 1993 transformed to a four star hotel! Some say that the hotel is worth a travel to, forget the journey!
Join the club!
Walking to and from work I pass the “Student Hotel” (more info her). And as the name already indicates its a hotel for students 🙂 Besides giving the students a place to sleep they provide al kind of different spaces to study, be creative or whatever. On one of the windows of these spaces “Join the club” is shown, I liked it and now you can enjoy it too!
